Sport

Sport is an important aspect to life at our school and students are encouraged and expected to participate to the best of their ability.  Our sports provision is excellent and we have a diverse co-curricular programme to supplement the core Games curriculum.

Students are taught Physical Education in single sex groups by one of the department's fully qualified P.E teachers. At Key Stages 3-5 students will experience one P.E lesson per week and at Key Stages 3-4 one Games session per week.

Students will be taught a range of sporting activities which change each half-term. Activities will include: table tennis, touch-tennis, badminton, netball, handball, basketball, strength and conditioning, gymnastics, climbing and athletics. Lessons will follow the P.E department LPC model (Learn, Perform, Compete) with students first learning or refining a skill/technique, then performing the skill/technique within a game related practice and finally practising the skill/technique within a small sided game.

Games Curriculum

Students will experience one Games lesson a week and are taught in single sex groups. Games lessons are split into both squad practice and participation sessions. Squad practice will focus on individual and team techniques, strategies and tactics for a sustained period of time, whilst participation sessions allow groups to experience a broad range of activities in addition to the P.E curriculum with a focus on improving general fitness and developing a life-long interest in sport.

Participation sessions: students rotate through activities including; football, touch-rugby, volleyball, rounders, badminton, capture the flag, table tennis, short-tennis. Students are taught Games in single sex groups with students from a variety of forms.

Squad selection will be made at the discretion of the P.E department and follow a rigorous talent identification process. All Year 7 students will be expected to attend initial talent identification sessions with all other year groups given the opportunity to attend squad practice to ‘trial’ for selection in future years. Current SHFGS squad sport includes:

Boys – Football (Winter and Spring), Rugby (Winter and Spring), Cricket (Summer), Tennis (Summer) and Athletics (Summer) *

Girls – Netball (Winter and Spring), Football (Winter and Spring), Cricket (Summer), Rounders (Summer), Tennis (Summer) and Athletics (Summer) *

Squads will compete in several formats of competition; National competition, Regional competition, County competition, District competition and a highly competitive friendly fixtures programme. Current fixtures, results, sports news and more can be found by following the school’s sports Twitter account @SHFGS_Sport.

*Additional sports such as badminton, futsal, 5 a-side football and indoor athletics will run alongside the above but will not have practice sessions during games afternoons.

Examination - Physical Education

Students are taught GCSE and A-Level P.E following the AQA exam board. Examination P.E is split into theory and practical elements, with the larger weighting on the theoretical side. Exam P.E is taught mainly through classroom based theory lessons and includes topics such as:

  • Sports Psychology
  • Biomechanics
  • Anatomy and Physiology

Students hoping to study P.E at GCSE and A-Level must be prepared for extensive writing and note-taking in a variety of topics.

We aim to offer multiple groups at both GCSE and A-Level (GCSE - two Year 10 groups and two Year 11 groups. A-Level - one Year 12 group and one Year 13 group).

Co-Curricular Sport

Our P.E department offers a variety of co-curricular clubs both during and after school. Whilst some clubs are free to attend, some require a small contribution as they are led by highly experienced and specialist coaching staff. Current SHFGS Sports Clubs include activities such as; Short-Tennis, X-Country, Yoga, Table-Tennis, Futsal and Fencing. An updated SHFGS Sports Club list will be sent home at the start of each half-term, displayed in each form room and advertised on the SHFGS Sports Club board. All enrolment details will be sent to parents regarding specialist sports clubs.
